What to Bring... and what not to bring

Obviously we do not expect you to race out and by all new gear, but you should be smart about what you do and do not bring on this trip. It is our opinion that if you can't carry it on your back you are bringing too much. Trust us... the extra baggage ends up becoming a hassle.

We recommend each student have one travel backpack and one day pack, carrying water and layers is essential for the climates we will be visiting. If you don't have a good travel backpack, you can either rent or borrow from local outfitters. Here in Flagstaff, Peace Surplus rents great internal frame backpacks for $6/day. There is also a growing Wonder Treks family that have been sharing/selling their former gear.  We even have a "gear swap" facebook page set up to help with this.

Your dayback will be used for day travel while the luggage is left in hotel rooms or storage. This means you can't get all of your clothing to Peru by stuffing it in your daypack, once there you need to be able to grab it and go with your raingear, sunblock, bug spray, water, etc.

To get you started on your packing list, here are a few of the more important items to begin thinking about...

  • Backpack (We do not recommend a suitcase as this can be difficult to pull on cobblestone streets
  • Daypack
  • Headlamp and extra batteries
  • Boots or sturdy hiking shoes
  • Sandals (flip flops are not recommended as walking sandals, but can be handy for showering)
  • Hat
  • Travel towel (normal terrycloth towels will not dry, but will mildew, a sarong is a great option)
  • Sunblock
  • Bug spray
  • Camera
  • Long johns (Cusco and Aquas Calliente can get cold)
  • Rain jacket
  • Hydrocortisone Cream (those bug bites can be itchy!)
  • Small personal first-aid kit
  • bathroom essentials (most hotels do not provide soap, shampoo, etc.)
  • A great attitude and big smiles!

      What NOT to bring:
      • Flashy jewelry
      • Heavy cotton clothing like jeans
      • Bad attitudes!
