Medication
Is your student bringing along any daily medications on their Wonder Trek?
If so, it is required that you fill out our medical form to advise us of all medications they will be bringing along with them. The staff at Wonder Treks will contact you should they require more understanding as to the usage, dosage, and/or side effects of you students medication.
Medications, whether daily or preventative, must be disclosed to Wonder Treks. The Medical Form is required of all students, and is used to inform medical staff both at Wonder Treks and in foreign countries if needed.
Daily Medications
Malaria Medications
Anti-malarial medication is a family choice. The Center for Disease Control recommends anti-malarial medication for travels below 6,561', which includes the area we will travel to in the Amazon Basin. Although the choice of which anti-malarial is between you and your doctor, we highly recommend you avoid Mefloquine (Lariam). This particular prophylaxis is known to cause nightmares and difficulty sleeping. Your medical provider should be able to reccommend a good anti-malarial for your student.
Health Concerns
Should your student have any health issues you are concerned about while traveling abroad, please contact Wonder Treks to discuss the potential risks while traveling, if any.
Students who suffer from asthma do not tend to be effected by the amount of walking or hiking we do while abroad. Wonder Treks uses these adventures to encourange our students to pace themselves to enjoy their travels.
Antibiotic: Traveler's Diarrhea
REQUIRED: A broad spectrum anitbiotic is required for all students to treat traveler's diarrhea.
Traveler's Diarrhea (TD) is the most common and most predictable illness affecting international travelers. Although TD is rarely life-threatening it can be very uncomfortable and non-conducive to daily travel. According to the CDC most cases resolve witout treatment in 1-2 days. Students will be taught preventative measures for avoiding TD while traveling with Wonder Treks.
