Travel and Medical Insurance

Wonder Treks requires that each participant have international medical coverage, and evacuation insurance while traveling in a foreign country. There are a few reasons we require these types of coverage. First and foremost, most health insurance companies do NOT cover international travel or they require upfront payment for which you may not be reimbursed. Also, majority of health insurance policies do not offer international emergency medical transportation or evacuation. Although, we at Wonder Treks work hard to minimize the risks that may lead to the need for this type of coverage, it would be naive to suggest they are not present.

If your health insurance covers emergency evacuation, we will need the necessary information with us while traveling. Please find out from your provider what steps are necessary to enlist this service while in a foreign country if needed.

Insurance Companies

Through our own research we found two highly recommended companies: Global Rescue and Travel Guard. Global Rescue is specifically for evacuations; Travel Guard provides both travel insurance and medical / evacuation coverage. Please note, Wonder Treks does not endorse either of these companies.

Global Rescue - www.GlobalRescue.com

Global Rescue provides medical evacuation and security coverage in both full-year and short-term memberships. Global Rescue utilizes physicians and medical technicians from Johns Hopkins Medicine and provides 24-hour a day medical consultations in English. If an evacuation is necessary, Global Rescue will come to us - wherever we are.

Travel Guard - www.TravelGuard.com

Travel Guard insurance offers different level plans for medical, travel, and evacuation insurance on both international and domestic trips. Travel Guard will reimburse plan participants for trip cancellation, inability to travel, and luggage loss.

To be eligible for evacuation coverage, you must be sure to purchase a plan that includes the evacuation coverage.

Evacuation coverage includes "emergency evacuation to the nearest medical facility that can properly treat a patient" (ie, an in country hospital if needed).

The Gold or Platinum plans (or My Travel Guard) covers evacuation expenses all the way to the USA, if you purchase the "medical expense upgrade" (or the Hospital of Choice upgrade).

This does cover remote evacuations, they will "contact local emergency services". Of course this isn't always possible, and we can call Travel Guard to set up an air evacuation if necessary.

Travel Guard also provides 24 hour on-call doctors that we can utilize for advice, this service is available to any plan with medical assistance.
